How to use HSCODE.UK

Importing goods into the UK follows a simple but exact sequence. Getting the right classification first saves you time, money and border delays.

  1. Find the correct commodity code. Search by keyword or code using our UK Trade Tariff tool — codes run from 6-digit HS headings to the full 10-digit UK commodity code.
  2. Check the duty rate. The UK applies the UK Global Tariff to most imports. Preferential rates may apply for goods originating in countries with a UK trade agreement.
  3. Check VAT, quotas and restrictions. Import VAT (normally 20%), tariff-rate quotas, import licences, prohibitions and trade remedies (anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard duties) can all change your final landed cost.
  4. Compare with EU TARIC or WCO HS. If you also trade with the EU, or need the internationally harmonised description, our TARIC and WCO tools cover both.

Frequently asked questions

What is a commodity code?

A commodity code (or HS code) classifies your goods for customs. The first six digits are the internationally agreed Harmonized System (HS) subheading; the UK adds two digits for the 8-digit UK code and a further two for the 10-digit commodity code you must declare.

Where does HSCODE.UK get its data?

UK tariff data is queried live from the official GOV.UK Trade Tariff API, which is maintained by HMRC. HS 2022 nomenclature comes from the WCO / UN Comtrade public classification. EU TARIC links point to the official European Commission consultation.

Is import VAT the same as the duty rate?

No. Customs duty is charged on the value of the goods; import VAT (standard rate 20%) is normally charged on the goods value plus duty and shipping. Some goods are zero-rated for VAT. HSCODE.UK shows both where available.

Do you give legally binding advice?

No. Our results are for guidance only. For a binding decision on your goods, apply to HMRC for a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) ruling before you import.
