What is the difference between HS, CN and TARIC codes?

The HS is the internationally harmonised 6-digit system. The EU extends it to 8 digits in the Combined Nomenclature (CN), and TARIC adds two more digits (10 in total) to record EU-wide measures such as anti-dumping duties, quotas and suspensions.

Does TARIC include VAT?

No. TARIC covers the Common Customs Tariff and EU trade measures only. VAT and excise rates are set by each EU member state and are not part of TARIC.

Is TARIC data updated in real time?

The European Commission updates the TARIC consultation daily (evenings, Monday to Friday). Full TARIC exports in Excel format are published on a monthly basis and are freely downloadable.

About the data. TARIC measures (duty rates, preferences, quotas, trade defence measures) are maintained daily by the European Commission. Because they change frequently, HSCODE.UK links each code directly to the official TARIC consultation where the current measures are shown. The full TARIC dataset is also published monthly by the Commission for free download.

Conventional & autonomous duties

The Common Customs Tariff (CCT) third-country duty rates, plus autonomous suspensions and tariff ceilings adopted by the Council.

Preferential arrangements

Lower or zero rates under EU trade agreements, the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP), and preferential quotas.

Trade defence instruments

Anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures that apply additional duties to specific products from specific origins.

Restrictions & prohibitions

Import and export restrictions, CITES controls, dual-use goods, agricultural measures and surveillance requirements.

Not in TARIC: VAT and excise duties are national levies set by each EU member state. TARIC does not contain them.
